Abstract

By applying the concept of cultural memory to the reading of Psalm 72, this paper analyzes how it makes a complex whole through a mixture of the old and the new to reconstruct the Solomonic kingship described in 1 Kings. When compared to other royal psalms, Psalm 72 focuses more on the social responsibility of a particular king, Solomon. The parallel between Psalm 72 and 1 Kings 3-11 reinforces the so-called Solomonization. In particular, a tributary system plays a significant role in bolstering up the universal rule over the nations both in the Solomonized psalm and 1 Kings 3-11. However, the Solomonic kingship through the tributary system gives rise to a moral contradiction between the king’s justice for the poor and his exploitation of the nations because it paradoxically identifies him as the one who protects the poor by making others poor. Such a contradictory description of the Solomonic kingship causes one to wonder how the psalm was read by the ancient readers who were aware of the narratives of Solomon in 1 Kings. Given that Psalm 72 was used as a royal psalm in the liturgy for cultivating royal legends, it functioned as cultural memory concerning the ideal kingship of Solomon in ancient Israel. Although Psalm 72 emphasizes justice and righteousness of the Solomonic kingship, it ignores his oppression and exploitation of people and nations. Moreover, Psalm 72 constructs the new image of the Solomonic kingship by highlighting the royal ethics for the poor that is silent in the stories of 1 Kings. Psalm 72 also serves as counter-memory against the Solomonic oppression and exploitation that resulted in the division of the kingdom of Israel. In Psalm 72, consequently, Solomon is remembered as the exemplary king who executed justice and righteousness for his people, especially the poor, and the perfect agent of God who established the universal dominion over the nations.
