Abstract
This article investigates the formation of anti-Assyrian movement in Syria-Palestine during the rule of Tiglath-pileser(Ⅲ), and especially reconstructs relations between Rezin and Israel, and relations between Menahem and Pekah. For the purpose this article analyzes the relevant literary sources. Assyrian inscriptions are incompatible data. The Eponym Chronicles indicates the locations of Assyrian main army in Syria-Palestine; The annals and summary inscriptions inform Tiglath-pileser’s military activities in details. Biblical materials are also main sources, but gives two ways of counting of Pekah’s ruling. One way is to allow 20 year ruling (2 Kings 15:27) and another way is to allow 5 or 6 years. Both ways are acceptable if Pekah ruled at the certain part of Israel while Jeroboam, Menahem and Pekaiah ruled in Samaria. Based on biblical evidences and relevant Assyrian inscriptions, this article investigates the length of Pekah’s ruling, the relations of Menahem and Pekah, the possibility of divided Israel, the ruling area of Pekah, and the role of Rezin in the division. The article suggests followings. Pekah ruled some northern part of Israel before he became the king in Samaria. Pekah was the rival ruler of Menahem and Pekaiah. Pekah’s twenty-year ruling as king includes this rival period. The event that Menahem sent heavy gifts to Tiglathpileser( 2 Kgs 15:29) is to secure his ruling from threat of the competitor. Pekah could rule the area of Gilead with the support of Rezin, king of Aarm-Damascus. During the last days of Pekah Israel lost some northern parts of its territory and a lot of people were delivered in exile to Assyria. After 732 BCE Israel existed as a small country having regions around Samaria and having some southern parts.
