Abstract

This study aims at a historical reconstruction of the event which happened between two leaders, Sennacherib and Hezekiah in 701 BCE. The relevant materials for the reconstruction are Assyrian royal inscriptions and Ⅱ Kings 18:13-19:37. Assyrian inscriptions of Sennacherib have been recognized as the most important historical evidences for the historical reconstruction of Sennacherib-Hezekiah event together with the biblical passages mentioned above. However, the propagandistic characters of the Assyrian records and their historical reliability have not been sufficiently dealt with. This study collects the relevant Assyrian texts and analyses them critically. This study also examines co-called Stade-Childs theory on II Kings 18:13-19:37, the result of which has affected deeply to the formations of the historical reconstruction. This study will reveal problems of the theory and problems of the historical reconstructions founded on the theory. This study reveals that the relevant Assyrian records in some points had been touched for the purpose of the glorification of the king. This study also reveals that although so-called Account B is certainly theological and confessional, but still it is grounded on the event actually happened.
