Abstract
This study probes the understanding of male and female in the Gospel of Thomas, focusing on logion 114 with respect to logion 22 and 85. Logion 114 has attracted the attention of many studies because of Jesus' teaching that a woman must transform into a man to attain life. The demand for a woman to change into a man was considered male-centered and misogynistic. If logion 114 is read along with logion 22, the former provides a message to counter male-centered misogynistic thoughts. If the latter says we must change to a spiritual stage that abolishes the distinction between men and women, the former defenses Mary against the controversy over her qualifications to be a disciple. Logion 85 makes it possible to assume that a wrong or insufficient understanding of Adam lies behind Peter and other male disciples’view on Mary. Peter, who exclusively connects masculinity with becoming a living spirit, could not differentiate the original Adam from the separated Adam. Like female disciples, Peter and other males can be transformed into Adam, a "living spirit." Logion 114 is likely based on a controversy over the qualifications to participate in table fellowship in the Thomas’ community. It suggests that there was an active and specific effort to reject Mary from the community's gathering. Jesus defends Mary's discipleship and her status against such voices of exclusion.
