Abstract

The digital humanities map proposed in this study re-contextualizes historical and cultural contents related to a region by legal district, and, thereby, helps understand the time-serial changes of a city space and conduct area studies based on placeness. For instance, urban history researchers can use space information recontextualized by legal district to show time-serial changes of the region and demonstrate the nature of the current urban space as a ‘built environment’ that was established by constructors and construction engineers. In addition, citizens who are interested in the current issues of the region can actively engage in urban development process based on the placeness and historicity revealed by the digital humanities map, thereby, participating in creating humanist urban environment. Furthermore, historical and cultural contents focused on placeness can help explore and write about the region and place, as opposed to grand discourses on the nation and state. By reorganizing area studies that used to be focused on literature as microscopic discussions, it is possible to cooperate with other disciplines. Area studies, which have been conducted independently from conventional disciplines such as history, culture, economy, sociology, literature, and art, failed to actively communicate with fast-developing science and technology including information space technology. In other words, literature-oriented humanities focused on macroscopic discussions such as formation of nation-state and modernity, rather than exploring change of spaces and, thereby, lifestyles of people, according to technological development. However, digital humanities map comprehensively proposes relevance among the process of time-serial changes in a space, people, events, and places, and, therefore, is expected to change the direction of area studies from the individual and specialized investigation into comprehensive and integrated one. Furthermore, the map will allow both historians and other various humanist scholars to view and analyze data, which they have approached from an individual and specialized perspective so far, from the perspective of time-series based on location information.
