본고에서 언급하는 전자문화지도는 조선시대라는 시간값과, 한반도라는 공간값, 그리고 데이터베이스로 구축한 조선시대의 문화정보라는 주제값을 갖는다. 사실 문화정보라는 것은 자연환경까지를 포함한 전체집합적 성격을 띠기 때문에 아직은 대상이 한정적일 수밖에 없다. 본고에서는 주로 고지도와 근대지도에 수록된 지명을 사례로 기술하였다. 조선시대 전자문화지도는 전근대 자료를 체계적으로 정리한 점에서 한국학 또는 한국 인문학의 토대를 더욱 공고히 해줄 것이며, 한국 근대의 이행과 근대성을 이해하는 데에도 직접적으로 공헌할 것이다. 또한 본 연구에서는 방대한 자료를 텍스트와 함께 지도로 재구성한 전자문화지도가 조선시대 문화현상을 연구하는 인문학의 새로운 방법론으로 기능할 수 있는지를 조심스럽게 묻는다.
Abstract
This paper, titled “The Digitalized Cultural Atlas,” has three dimensions: the Choson Dynasty(1392～1910) as time, the Korean peninsula as space, and culture as a theme. The term “culture,” however, cannot be simply defined because it encompasses everything related to human life, including even the natural environment, among others. For this reason, “cultural information” will be confined to geographical names shown in traditional and modern atlases. With the organization of a variety of materials produced in the premodern period, this digitalized cultural atlas is expected to lay a solid foundation for the fields of Korean studies and humanities and contribute to a better understanding of both the premodern-modern transition as well as Korean modernity. This paper also examines to what extent the cartography of this digitalized cultural atlas can be a useful method for the research on the cultural phenomena of Choson society.
