이 논문은 빅 데이터 시대 속에서 기존의 인문학이 가진 한계를 극복하기 위해 대두되고 있는 ‘디지털 인문학’의 위상과 범위, 역할 등에 대해 종합적으로 검토하는 데에 주된 초점이 있다. 특히 국내의 디지털 인문학에 대한 논의는 초창기의 수준에 머물러 있음을 국내외의 연구동향을 검토하면서 살펴보고 디지털 인문학이 국내에 어떤 식으로 정립되어야 할 것인가에 대한 포괄적인 견해를 제시한다. 또한 빅 데이터의 활용과 관련하여 국내에서 진행되고 있는 몇몇 사례를 소개, 검토함으로써 디지털 인문학은 기존 인문학을 대체하려는 시도가 아님을 강조할 것이다. 특히 인문학을 산업화와 연계시키려는 몇몇 제안에 문제가 있음을 지적하고, 디지털 인문학은 “디지털”이라는 새로운 도구와 방법론을 활용하여 인문학의 지평을 새로운 차원으로 승화시키는 데 기여할 수 있다는 점을 강조할 것이다.
Abstract
We have entered the era of big data. Big data has become a major topic in various fields including economics, management, medicine, and computer science. This paper is a comprehensive review of the role that the ‘digital humanities’ has played in overcoming the limitations of traditional humanities in this era of big data. In particular, through investigation of the research trends within the digital humanities, we point out that the digital humanities in domestic research communities are still rudimentary compared to the western research communities. In this paper, we present a comprehensive view of how the digital humanities should be further established in Korea. In addition, by introducing some case studies related to the use of big data in Korea, we argue that the digital humanities are not an attempt to replace the existing traditional humanities, and they are not merely an industrialization of the humanities. Rather, we argue that the digital humanities can contribute to expanding the horizons of the humanities, pointing them in a new direction by utilizing new "digital" tools and methodologies.
