Abstract
This study examines the poetic representation of two emblematic instances of state violence in modern Korean history: the Jeju April 3 Incident and the Gwangju May 18 Democratization Movement. Particular attention is given to metonymic expressions that emerge through acts of invocation and naming. May poetry, as a form that directly confronts historical reality, reconstructs collective memories of democracy, freedom, and the victims’ sacrifices through the second-person address of “you.” Such acts of invocation constitute a defining formal characteristic of May poetry. In contrast, April 3 poetry has established its status as testimonial literature, unfolding around the calling of names associated with the ethical consciousness of “the survivors.” In this context, the act of naming the victims functions as a metonymic gesture that summons forgotten lives into the present. By tracing these modes of invocation in April 3 poetry and May poetry, this study illustrates how the memory of state violence is both deepened and re-enacted in poetic form, while also shedding light on the aesthetic and ethical implications of genocide poetry.
