Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive diagnosis of the current state of Naju Studies and proposes strategies for effectively utilizing Naju's rich historical and cultural resources. While regional studies in South Korea have been revitalized since the democratization in 1987 and the establishment of local autonomy, they still face the challenge of establishing a clear academic identity. Within this context, Naju Studies, initiated by the city's enactment of the first ordinance in the Honam region in 2020, has built a foundation for scholarship; however, it remains limited, focusing primarily on historical and cultural research and lacking sufficient participation from local residents. Based on this critical analysis, this study suggests that Naju Studies must transition from a discipline focused on preserving the past to a practical field of study that addresses the present and future challenges of the region. To this end, two key strategies are proposed. First, it is essential to strengthen the linkage between academic depth and the utilization of historical and cultural resources. The establishment of a standing body like the 'Naju Historical and Cultural Committee' would enable systematic research to authenticate historical facts and preserve cultural heritage. By academically re-establishing Naju's multilayered historical narratives, from the Mahan Confederacy to the Goryeo Dynasty and the modern independence movement, and transforming them into cultural content through storytelling, the city's identity can be solidified. Second, a citizen-participatory historical and cultural education system must be developed. Naju Studies should evolve beyond simple knowledge transfer to become a platform for civic education, where residents become proactive participants in the production and problem-solving of their own culture. This can be achieved by establishing educational centers and developing curricula linked to local schools and universities, offering hands-on programs that connect Naju's past and present. In conclusion, by fostering an integrated governance system that combines academic research, institutional support, and citizen engagement, Naju Studies can become a practical driving force for community integration and development. This effort will ultimately enable Naju to become a sustainable city that leads the future with its deep historical roots, setting a model for a dynamic and open approach to regional studies.
