감정노동의 사회학적 탐색: 이론적 고찰

초록

이 글은 감정노동이 기획되고 수행되는 사회적 맥락을 이론적으로 고찰하고 있다. 감정노동이 중요한 노동양식으로 등장하고 그것이 노동자 통제의 핵심 요소가 되는거시적 맥락에 대한 이론적 논의는 감정노동을 둘러싼 권력관계의 지형과 모순을 드러냄으로써 구조적 이해를 가능하게 한다. 이러한 목적에 따라 이 글은 혹실드와 그녀 이후 이루어져 온 서구의 감정노동 연구들을 살펴보고 있다. 21세기 사회에서 감정노동이 중요한 노동문제로 떠오르게 된 데에는 몸과 감정의 재발견, 감정의 상품화, 소비사회의 등장, 고객지향 관료제, 서비스 노동과정의 합리화, 소비자주권의 신화, 노동시장과 조직의 성별 위계, 불평등의 상호교차성(intersectionality) 등의 요인이 작용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 감정노동의 사회적․조직적 맥락을 검토한 결과 과도한감정노동의 폐해를 줄이기 위해서는 노동자의 자율성이 핵심적 요소임을 알 수 있었다.

Abstract

This paper sets out to investigate the social context in which emotional labor is designed and executed. The theoretical approaches to the structural background where emotional labor is expanded will reveal the complexity and contradiction in power relations surrounding emotional labor. This paper examines the research results and arguments raised by Hochschild and other researchers after her. It is the factors like discovering body and emotion, the commercialization of emotion, consumer society, rationalization in service labor process, gender hierarchy in organizations, and intersectionality of gender, ethnicity, class and etc. that have been found to be influential. In order to reduce negative effects of emotional labor, it is argued that the autonomy of a worker is the most significant factor.
