Abstract

Dokseup Sinan Ilhan Daehwa published by Gyeongseong Japanese Magazine Publisher in 1906 is a phrasebook based on the first issue of the magazine titled Dokseup Ilo Japji that was published for a year from 1905. The book encompasses contents for both beginners and advanced Japanese speakers. The book illustrates the Japanese education in Korea before the Japanese public education begins in the Korean peninsula. In order to achieve objectives of the book which is “improvements of the Japanese skills” and “promotion of the fluent communication with the Japanese,” the book consists of 9 different topics such as salutation, family, education, business, trip, astronomy, geography, plants and animals and displays Japanese dialogue based on different topics and situations. In addition the book naturally promotes the natural understanding of the lifestyle in Japan, modernized civilization, and modernized school (such as Gyeongseong Hakdang’s Japanese School), The biggest task during the time was to train mediators between Japan and Korea (Choson) and the purpose of the book was to educate the practical and modernized individuals for the mediation. In addition Dokseup Sinan Ilhan Hoehwa is an important book in that it offers various study strategies like schema. The schema such as the cultural differences through depicting correct pronunciation, the words and phrases used in daily life, explanations for the understanding of the context, and natural methods of Japanese-Korean translations and Japanese culture.
