Abstract
This article analyzes metaphors and symbols in Seong-gyo Lee’s religious poetry and interprets the meanings of Holy Trinity ― Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ― through Karl Barth’s theology. In Lee’s poems, God the Father appears as the transcendent Creator and righteous Judge, approaching humanity as the Word and source of truth; God the Son as the incarnate true human, the Reconciler through the cross, and the Savior who fulfills salvation in eschatological history; and God the Holy Spirit as the indwelling Paraclete who illuminates truth, empowers prayer, and leads ― through faith ― to healing and ontological transformation. These Trinitarian meanings are rendered like a sacred painting through images of nature and daily life, set in a primordial village of mountains and sea that the poet claims as his homeland. Lee’s Primordial Nature becomes the space where God’s omnipresent mystery is manifest and paradise is imagined, while its inhabitants are portrayed as believers obeying God’s Word amid trials. Ultimately, Seong-gyo Lee’s religious poetry idealizes a paradisal faith community in which Holy Trinity is present within vast Primordial Nature, deepening a distinctively Korean theological imagination in modern Korean religious poetry.
