Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the transcendence in Kim Hyeon-Seung’s poems of faith from Karl Barth’s theological point of view. In this thesis, the concept of transcendence in Karl Barth’s Church Dogmatics and Prayer is referred to in order to interpret the transcendence in Kim Hyeon-Seung’s religious poems. The transcendence from human language to divine language is discussed in Part II. “Autumn Prayer” is a kind of prayer poem as a confession to God. It demonstrates that when man prays, he escapes from his finiteness and gains freedom before God. It illustrates that the relationship with the Absolute, which has been forgotten by humans, is restored through the words of God in “The Advocate's Song”, which shows a transcendental longing for the language of God. The transcendence from human imperfection to divine perfection is examined in Part III. In “Tears” and others, human imperfection as a creature of God and a finite being is embodied in a sorrowful mood. In contrast, in “Son of God”, the perfection of God is integrated with a sense of joy. Finally, in Part IV, the transcendence from the human earth to the divine heaven is explored. In “Sturdy Solitude”, the human earth, that is, the world of immanence, appears. However, in “The Last Earth”, a return to faith, Karl Barth interprets the true meaning of transcendence, which is implied in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy kingdom come” (Matthew 6:9–12). In conclusion, God and human, and heaven and terrestrial are embodied, in contrast to Kim Hyeon-Seung’s poetry. However, in his poems as prayers, the ontological transcendence of humans toward God, a transcendent being, is intensely depicted. Paradoxically, Kim Hyun-Seung created a transcendent orientation toward the heaven through the tragedy of beings on earth.
