Abstract
This essay attempts to understand Baek Seok’s écriture strategy in connection with the historical task of ‘unifying spoken and written language’ that spanned from the late Joseon Dynasty to the 1930s. The author posits that two contradictory impulses were inherent within the task of unifying spoken and written language. This is starkly revealed in the 1933 conflict over the Korean Orthography Unification Plan between phoneticism (the Park Seung-bin faction) and ideographicism (the Ju Shi-gyeong faction). First, phoneticism, which subordinates writing to sound, is linked, according to Kojin Karatani, to an ‘inner-directed impulse’ that constructs the illusion of discovering the ‘inner self’. However, the inner world constructed by Baek Seok’s écriture is not Kojin Karatani’s empty, pure inner world opposed to the object (landscape). Baek Seok understands the inner world through the phenomenology of the ‘sensory body-subject’ ― scent, taste, sound. In works like 「Hamju Poem」, 「Decoction」, and 「Dog」, sensation presupposes the fusion of object and subject, summoning past memories into the present. Thus, Baek Seok’s speaker is not a ‘speaking subject’ but a ‘listening subject’ open to the sounds of things, and his inner self is an ‘open inner self’ mutually permeating with objects and others. Second, ideographicism advocates clarifying grammatical elements to enhance readability, linking speech to the activity of ‘writing and reading’ ― a ‘text-oriented impulse’. This pursues the ‘semantic autonomy of the text’, asserting that meaning must be preserved even when the author’s (speaker’s) intent or context is absent. As Derrida pointed out, this autonomy is grounded in the ‘repeatability’ of writing, and modernism pushed this to its extreme by demanding the ‘death of the author’. Baek Seok also focuses on ‘repeatability’, but this differs from the modernist approach that presupposes the author’s absence. Baek Seok focuses on the ‘repeatable usability’ of objects. In works like 「White Flower」, 「Mountain Lodge」, and 「Wooden Bowl」, the meaning of an object (word) is defined as an ‘implicated meaning’ encompassing the person who used it and the entire specific context of its use. Objects are sustained by this ‘implicated meaning’ and can be repeatedly reused in similar situations. In conclusion, if the principle of ‘language-script unity’ exists within the tension between the ‘birth of the author’ (inner-directed) and the ‘death of the author’ (text-directed), Baek Seok’s écriture demonstrates a unique strategy that seeks the ‘interpenetration’ of these two extremes. Rather than eliminating the author, he redefines the author as a ‘language user’ within a specific situation, incorporating them as part of the meaning. Thus, his work demonstrates that modernism and traditional lyric poetry are different expressions of the two contradictory impulses inherent in the unification of spoken and written language.
