Abstract
A Comparison of Methods of Stating the Purpose in Emails : With a Focus on Types of Tasks and Expressions Used This article investigates the method of stating the purpose in emails, based on the understanding that whether the purpose is stated will be directly connected with the consideration for readers in terms of readability. Ten types of tasks have been given to 30 Korean learners of Japanese and 30 native Japanese speakers to collect and analyze 600 emails. The ten types of tasks reflect both the hypothetical situations that may be encountered by international students and the hypothetical recipients. As a result of comparison by types of tasks and by the participants’ native language, a difference has been observed in the method of stating the purpose and the number of items of the purpose that appeared. When compared by the participants’ native language, native Japanese speakers have a strong tendency to state the purpose in the beginning part of the emails, compared to Korean learners of Japanese. In addition, the common conditions of the tasks for which the purpose is more likely to be stated are as follows: (i) the sender is not close to the reader; (ii) the reader has a significant burden; (iii) it is necessary to state the purpose in detail; and (iv) the email is based on the information obtained from the reader. The analysis of the expressions used to state the purpose demonstrates that both native Japanese speakers and Korean learners of Japanese use similar expressions. However, no renyo-chushi form has been found in the expressions used by Korean learners of Japanese to mention business, and some honorific errors and colloquial expressions with low formality have been observed.
