Abstract

This study focuses on a Japanese course at a South Korean university and explores teaching practices centered on presentations and conversations. These practices draw on the theoretical frameworks of plurilingualism, pluriculturalism, and translanguaging. The study examines how learners use diverse linguistic and cultural resources to engage with others, and how such interactions can inform a shift in educational goals. Although students primarily used Japanese, they also incorporated their mother tongues, other languages, sign language, and nonverbal modes when needed. These practices revealed that prioritizing linguistic accuracy or standardized forms alone limits the potential of language education. For learners from diverse backgrounds, Japanese is not just a target language to master but a means of sharing thoughts and experiences. The integration of various resources enhances both communication and learning. Through this practice, the author also experienced a shift in my own educational perspective. The findings suggest that Japanese education should extend beyond language acquisition and support learners in expressing themselves and collaborating with others. This requires moving from teaching language as fixed norms to fostering inclusive, learner-centered, and interactive communication. Japanese language classrooms can thereby become spaces where learners feel safe using all their communicative resources
