Abstract

This study conducts a comparative analysis of anti-Korean discourse and its emotional characteristics in online spaces in Japan and China, utilizing a BERT-based AI language model. Drawing upon approximately 14,000 posts collected from major social media platforms such as Twitter, Weibo, and Baidu, the study quantitatively explores how users in each country construct and express anti-Korean sentiment. The analysis reveals that Japanese discourse centers around three main themes: political and diplomatic Korea-Japan relations, emotional hatred, and cultural comparison. Discourses related to political relations focus on conservative parties and diplomatic tensions, articulating structured criticism of Korea. Meanwhile, expressions of emotional aversion are often tied to net-rightist rhetoric and boycott movements. Cultural discourses, on the other hand, exhibit subtle superiority and cynicism in the evaluations of Korean media and content. Chinese anti-Korean discourse is structured around four major themes: political and diplomatic criticism, gender conflict and anti-feminism, historical and ideological confrontation, and cultural fatigue. In particular, the Chinese context demonstrates a complex entanglement of anti-Korean sentiment with gender issues and diplomatic conflicts, often blending misogyny with nationalist emotions. Additionally, consumption fatigue and cultural distance regarding Korean pop culture contribute to the spread of anti-Korean sentiment. These findings indicate that while Japanese and Chinese anti-Korean discourse may appear similar on the surface, their underlying structures are shaped by distinct socio-cultural contexts. The AI-based topic modeling applied in this study enables a more nuanced understanding by capturing the semantic relationships and contextual dynamics of language use. Such insights can support language learners in moving beyond surface-level vocabulary acquisition toward a deeper comprehension of the emotional and socio-cultural nuances in online discourse. Furthermore, by analyzing the pragmatic strategies, affective structures, and discursive contexts embedded in hate expressions, learners can cultivate both critical language awareness and intercultural sensitivity—ultimately enhancing communicative competence and fostering deeper cultural understanding of Japanese and Chinese societies.
