Abstract

This study explores the formation and transformation of elementary science education in modern Japan through an analysis of three key textbook types: yomihon (reading books), rika-sho (science textbooks), and rika tokuhon (science readers). It shows how Japan incorporated Western scientific knowledge through both translation and adaptation as it modernized its educational system. The subject rika (science) was formally institutionalized with the 1886 Elementary School Order, marking a pedagogical shift toward practical, experience-based learning. Prior to this, scientific content was embedded in yomihon as part of moral and literary instruction. Later, rika-sho emerged to promote direct scientific observation and experimentation. The hybrid form, rika tokuhon, was developed as a transitional tool combining narrative and scientific discourse. However, as educational policy began emphasizing subject specialization, the use of rika tokuhon declined and eventually disappeared. The study concludes that the evolution of rika education reflects broader ideological and structural shifts in Japan’s modern educational reform.
