Abstract

This study examines the emotional patterns of Japanese Korean language learners and proposes a preliminary emotional scale tailored to this group to develop an enhanced indicator of the learners' emotional scale that modifies and complements the current Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (FLES) and the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). In the initial phase, 169 learners responded to a Japanese-translated version of the Foreign Language Enjoyment Scale (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2014) and the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986), along with open-ended questions. Based on thematic analysis and expert review, the scale was revised and restructured, which was pilot-tested with 67 learners. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were .92 for enjoyment and .87 for anxiety, both exceeding the standard threshold of .70 for internal consistency. Furthermore, confirmatory factor analysis yielded model fit indices (CFI =.94, RMSEA=.06), which meet established benchmarks for acceptable model fit (e.g., CFI > .90, RMSEA < .08). These indicators suggest that the scale may be suitable for assessing emotional dimensions in this learner population. Overall, participants reported more positive than negative emotions, with key sources of enjoyment including varied classroom activities, achievement, and close teacher-student interaction, while anxiety was mainly associated with peer comparison and classroom tension.
