Abstract
This study aims to examine the acquisition patterns of the Korean language causal periphrastic expressions `-neun barame, -neun tasse, -neun tonge' by intermediate to advanced Chinese learners of Korean and to use these findings as foundational data for enhancing Korean language education. To address the issue that language learners face when understanding the complex semantic and pragmatic features of `-neun barame, -neun tasse, -neun tonge', this study selected a total of 80 Chinese learners (21 at level 4, 29 at level 5, and 30 at level 6) and a control group of 30 native Korean speakers. We developed 24 grammaticality judgment test items that included the morphological and syntactic characteristics as well as the semantic and pragmatic features of each causal periphrastic expressions. Statistical analysis of the response scores between the two groups using one-way ANOVA revealed significant differences between the level 4 and level 6 groups, and between the level 5 and level 6 groups. In terms of the acquisition status of each causal periphrastic expressions, the level 6 learner group demonstrated significantly higher accuracy rates compared to the level 4 and level 5 learner groups. Level 4 and level 5 learners exhibited low accuracy rates in recognizing the tense pre-final ending constraint, sentence type constraint, and negative sentence constraint of `-neun barame, -neun tasse, -neun tonge' indicating that they found these aspects particularly difficult to acquire accurately. It is therefore suggested that teachers employ spiral teaching methods in classrooms which clearly present both structural and pragmatic features of each grammar point and provide diverse materials to help learners imrpove their comprehension and use of Korean causal expressions.
