Abstract
The debate of feminism in Hume’s philosophy firstly emerged from the issue as to whether Hume was a sexist or not concerning Hume’s discussion on the ‘chastity and modesty’ as ‘artificial virtue’ in Hume’s Treatise, Book III. The second issue on this debate is concerned with a new interpretation of feminism in terms of the contrast between reason and passion. In this paper, I first introduce these two issues. Secondly, I shall suggest that we can find the value of feminism when we take Hume’s reason as progressive one which is not in contrast with passion. We can say that Hume takes both morality and reason to be essentially temporal and progressive. He opposes the idea that morality and reason provide, in principle, a single privileged and timeless point of view on questions of right action and right belief. In this paper, I suggest that this constitute one of the most valuable aspects of Hume’s philosophy for feminism. These ideas has influenced on the 20th century feminist philosophy in two ways: they were divided amongst themselves, between those who believed in sexual difference, and in women’s superior sensibility and taste, and those who wanted, rather to insist on the equality of the sexes. Both attitudes are perennials of women’s political thought, but it is the egalitarian attitude which insists that there are political rights that can be justified by reason, and that reason is the same in both men and women, which fed most directly into the movement that has enhanced women’s political rights. I present a new paradigm on feminism by attempting to investigate a new concept of ‘reason’ which is one of the most controversial issue in Hume’s philosophy and by trying to reconcile Garrett’s and Baier’s interpretation on Hume’s reason
