흄의 자연적 덕과 인위적 덕의 구분에 관한 연구

덕은 흄의 도덕론에서 가장 중요한 개념이다. 이러한 흄의 덕론에서 가장 큰 특징은 덕을 자연적 덕과 인위적 덕으로 구분한다는 것이다. 그러나 흄은 명확한 분류 기준을 제시하지 않았고 후대의 논평가들은 ‘전통의 문제’와 ‘맥키의 문제’를 제기하며, 그 의미를 축소시키거나 왜곡했다. 이는 흄의 덕의 구분에 대한 오해에서 기인하다. 필자는 관련된 기존 논의와 흄의 저술을 바탕으로 동기에 사유와 반성이 개입되는지 여부를 기준으로 하는 오데이의 ‘동기 해석’의 타당성을 밝히고, 이를 두 덕의 구분 기준으로 채택하고자 한다. 동기 해석을 토대로 각 덕의 동기를 파악하면, 두 덕의 서로 다른 의미와 관계를 분명하게 확인할 수 있다. 자연적 덕은 인간 본성에서 비롯된 동기이기 때문에 흄의 도덕론에서 도덕과 관련된 인간학의 기초로서의 의미를 지니고, 인위적 덕은 주어진 환경에 적합한 규칙을 창조하는 작업으로서 의미를 지니며, 새로운 동기가 구성되는 과정을 제시한다. 두 덕의 관계를 살펴보면, 자연적 덕에 기초하여 인위적 덕이 발생한다는 점에서 자연적 덕이 발생론적으로 더 근본적이지만, 두 덕의 갈등 상황에서 인위적 덕이 자연적 덕보다 우선시되기 때문에 가치론적으로 우월하다. 또한 인위적 덕은 자연적 덕이 형성될 수 있는 사회적 여건을 유지한다는 점에서 선순환적인 상호의존적 관계를 지닌다는 점이 드러난다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present the correct criteria for the distinction between virtues of Hume, which can reveal the meaning of each virtues and the relationship between the two virtues. Hume distinguishes virtues from the natural virtue and artificial virtue. However, many critics argue that this distinction is meaningless and should be unified into one virtue by bringing up the Traditional problem and Mackie’s problem. In response, O’day presents a motive interpretation based on the distinction of virtue, which enables the distinction based on principles. If natural virtues and artificial virtues are distinguished through the motive interpretation, it is possible to understand the motives and characteristics of the two virtues. Thus, the meaning of each virtues and the relationship between the two virtues are clearly revealed in the virtue theory. This could form a foundation for a more accurate understanding of Hume's moral theory.
