Abstract
This paper aims to examine the relation between emotion and morality in Hume's theory. The result of the study is as follows. Firstly, in Hume the concept of 'sentiment' implies the perceptive faculty including original feeling and reflective impression; the concept of 'emotion' implies the reflective impression, one part of our sentiment; and the concept of 'passion' means the violent reflective impression, one part of our emotion. Secondly, because in Hume the moral sentiment is formed by the mixture of the calm passion as a part of passion and the calm reflective impression ,not falling under the passion, eventually our moral sentiment becomes derived from our emotion. And we can know that the faculty of sympathy making us form the artificial virtues in our emotion is the most important element for the forming of the moral sentiment. Thirdly, Hume's theory about the correction of sympathy clarifies that the emotion as the moral sentiment has the quality concerning the socialization of emotion. Through this theory of Hume, we can confirm that the morality is closely related with the emotion. Finally, the something else which becomes newly found especially in the course of this study is that Hume sets up the intermediate stage in the process of separation or division of certain things. Here all intermediate stages include the elements of the ends of both sides and the opposite elements exist as the middle stages on the linear continuity. Therefore, we can see Hume show that the intermediate stages as such inevitably exist in the domain of human life.
