Abstract

Of the various angles from which David Hume’s philosophy has been understood, one recent variation is that of emotion. The general objective of this study is to contribute to this line of understanding through a detailed examination of part IV, section VII, the conclusive section to the first book of A Treatise of Human Nature. However, in the conclusion where Hume dwells on emotion which is an important aspect of human nature), the content and the manner with which it is approached are significantly different from what can be found in other parts of his writing. In other words, instead of presenting a naturalist thesis or demonstrating the importance of emotion through his view on passion or moral sense, he puts forth emotion in a way that is both refreshing and intriguing. The specific aim of this study is to highlight and examine this variation in approach and method. In the conclusion, Hume does not discuss emotion as a direct subject of investigation. This section was written with the purpose of summarizing subjects and arguments discussed in the first book of Treatise, “Of the Understanding,” to which he adds his final opinion while reexamining the issues. When read in a different light, however, this section contains an unexpected quality. What was written in order to wrap up the first book and draw readers to the second and third also becomes a gateway to a panorama of Hume’s own emotions or feelings. The flow of these emotions proceed step by step alongside his rational reasoning, with each step bearing its own unique significance. Thus it is the aim of this study to look into the progression and changes in emotion, and bring to surface important aspects of Hume’s philosophy related to this matter.
