Abstract

Hysteria appears with language that interprets it. Here, body and language are entangled and intervene with each other. This paper finds the specific scenes where women’s body with symptoms of hysteria meets with the language of a professional as its starting point. The paper finds interest in the body and words of female hysteria patients, who are placed in front of the lens of authority of the professionals. However, its focus does not lie in the pathological or psychoanalytical hypotheses or theories. Rather, it highlights on the competition between the female patients and the male doctors. This paper examines what the female hysteria patients discloses and conceals in front of psychoanalysts in the process of analysis, what they give up in order to protect, how they tell it, and why male doctors like Freud, who argue that they found the truth in such process, have frequently failed in treating the patients. Hysteria is a physical expression of words that could not be spoken. It is a text that needs to be interpretation. Who has interpreted and analyzed this text, and into what language? This paper criticizes the violence and blindness in Freud’s study on hysteria, in the feminist philosophical viewpoint, and hopes to find possibilities in reading the unspoken female words that appear as hysteria, “differently” from Freud’s interpretation.
