Abstract
This study aimed to search the mythological meaning inherent in skull retribution narratives. Skull retribution narratives are narratives in which a person who properly entombs an abandoned skull is blessed and enjoys happiness. This study focused on Jeju Island’s <Samanibonpuri>. This narrative is characterized by a character worshipping a skull as a deity and escaping a miserable fate. Based on these narrative characteristics, this study examined the mythological meanings discovered when focusing on <Samanibonpuri.> Furthermore, the scope of this analysis was expanded to study the entirety of skull retribution narratives. This research confirmed the characteristics of several works as skull retribution narratives, as well as the inherent sacredness and transcendence of the skull. First, investigate <Samanibonpuri> based on the narrative development of the skull repayment tale. ① A character discovers a skull abandoned in a mountain, cave, or other location. Focusing on the distinct characteristics of the location, this narrative possesses a mythical quality. Therefore, it is confirmed that the skull possesses a sacred aspect, detached from secular contexts. ② The character carefully take the abandoned skeleton and placed it in a gopang, the place of burial. A gopang is the seat of the god of the forebears or the god of the upsin. The skeleton in <Saman-i Bonpuri> is considered forebear to Saman, so the ancestral deity is central. The skeleton formed a blood relationship with Saman and continued to exert its divine power. The narrative of burial was imbued with the ‘tension between the failure and success of the burial’. This sight demonstrated the ‘hierarchy’ between the skeleton and the character, effectively emphasizing their reverence for the god. Furthermore, the skeleton possesses prophetic powers, while Saman lacks them and is unable to directly resolve his own trouble, which is summarized through the keywords ‘foresight’ and ‘ignorance’. This also establishes the relationship between gods and persons. ③ The skeleton repaid the character’s kindness. The skeleton’s repayment served as an aspect of the character’s escape from chronic deprivation and agony. Therefore, as a mythological genre, this work imbued the skeleton with the expected value of a religious group. One after anotheranalyzed the skeleton repayment story’s mythic nature, but the skeleton’s ambivalence left solely faint traces of this character. To analyze this, the study presented the works based on two criteria. First, the skeleton must have sacred or transcendent qualities. Second, the skeleton’s emergence must have a affirmative effect. The works included: <Pastor Ki-geon>, <The Bachelor Who Buried General Hong’s Skull and Got Married>, <The Spirit of the Old Man Who Avenged His Enemy>, and <On His Way to See the Past>. He Was Blessed by the skull. ① The discovery narratives emphasized the grotesque state of the skulls. Therefore, no divine nature could be attributed to them. However, the skulls effect as magical things, like treasures. However, this was not attributed to the religious community’s expectations, but rather to their intrigue. ② The locations for burying the skulls were usually auspicious sites or auspicious locations. This coincided with feng shui tales of fortune. However, while the skulls in feng shui tales signify the bones of forebears, the skulls in the bone repayment narratives were unrelated to this. Due to the ambivalence of the skulls, their mythical nature remained only as vestige, sometimes portrayed as a distinguished-looking old man, white-haired old man riding white horses, or as divine being. The tension between the failure and success of the burial in the <Samani Bonpuri> had a different meaning. The burial in the <Samani Bonpuri> revealed a way in which the ominous feeling toward the scattered corpses was resolved through the characters’ burial practices. ③ The burial process involved scenes such as prophecy, visions, and wrestling with ghosts. While all of these occurred within the context of transcendence, the emphasis on the sacred meaning of the skeleton was limited. This is because the burial in the <Samani Bonpuri> focused on the individual’s pursuit of happiness. Consequently, the anticipation and desires of religious groups were weakened.
