Abstract

This study aims to clarify the modes of poetic configuration and inner consciousness manifested in the Old-style poetry(古詩) of Ganong Lee Heon-gyeong(1719–1791), a literati of the Gyeonggi Namin faction active during the reigns of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo in the late Joseon Dynasty. Despite his renown, existing research on Lee has been disproportionately focused on his philosophy and prose. Studies on his poetry have largely remained at a macroscopic level, lacking in-depth analysis of how his inner world was articulated through specific poetic forms. However, contemporary evaluations by prominent Gyeonggi Namin scholars such as Chae Paeng-yun, O Gwang-un, and Kang Bak confirm his exceptional poetic talent from a young age. Therefore, this study aims to examine his poetic works closely. This study proceeds from the critical problem that although Lee Heon-gyeong was a master of Geunche-si New-style poetry(近體詩)—proven by his sweeping success in state examinations—his literary essence and inner conflicts were more vividly expressed through the formally unrestricted genre of Gosi. While Geunche-si pursues a standardized aesthetic within strict rules of prosody and parallelism, Gosi is comparatively free from such constraints, making it a more suitable vessel for expressing a poet’s thoughts and sentiments with greater candor and depth. Lee was a scholar deeply versed in the fundamental spirit of Gosi, to the extent that he lectured on the Classic of Poetry(詩經) before the King at the age of 47, and he left behind over 100 poems in this style, demonstrating its significant quantitative weight in his work. Moreover, at the age of 71, he composed Bubyohaeng(浮橋行) in the Akbu(樂府) style for the national ceremony of the Hyeonlungwon relocation, earning high praise from King Jeongjo. This demonstrates that he was an "integrative poet" who consciously utilized the Gosi form and selected the optimal style depending on the nature of the subject matter. This study analyzes the Gosi in the Ganongjip(艮翁集) and identifies three core characteristics of how he configured his inner consciousness. First, through Imitative Old-style poetry(擬古詩), he persuasively conveyed universal sentiments. Second, he demonstrated a process where detailed observations of situations expanded into philosophical insights. Third, utilizing the free form of Gosi, he candidly exposed harsh realities and expressed critical consciousness, which had to be suppressed in Geunche-si. This study is significant in that it re-illuminates Lee Heon-gyeong, moving beyond the one-dimensional assessment of him as a “Master of Geunche-si(近體詩)” to recognize him as a multi-dimensional intellectual who deepened his political agony and philosophical reflections through the candid form of Gosi.
