Abstract
Although large collections of footage and newsreels from overseas archives are now accessible online, simple availability does not guarantee meaningful accessibility. Audiovisual records require contextual metadata—such as filming purpose, agents, power relations, and historical background—to become interpretable sources rather than mere visual documents. Using the <Moving Modern History:Vivid History> collection of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History as a case study, this research analyzes how first- and second-level cataloging, shot descriptions, annotations, title translations, and platform interfaces shape users’ ability to access and interpret audiovisual records. The findings demonstrate that metadata operates not as a technical supplement but as an archival practice that structures meaning and distributes interpretive authority. Based on this, the study proposes design principles for metadata structures and service environments that support users in critically reading and contextualizing audiovisual records.
