본 연구는 2028년 개관 예정인 인천시립미술관이 성공적으로 운영되는 데 필요한 지역 미술 아카이브 구축전략을 제시한다. 인천은 개항과 산업·이주 등 다층적 역사에도 불구하고 시립미술관 부재로 지역 미술 자료가 체계적으로 축적되지 못했다. 이에 연구는 미술관이 단순 전시 기관을 넘어 지역 미술사 정립과 도시문화 지식 허브 역할을 해야 한다고 강조한다. 국내 미술관 아카이브의 한계를 분석하고, 인천의 ‘도시 맥락(Urban Context)’을 반영한 수집 정책과 기준을 수립할 것을 제안한다. 특히 원로 작가 자료의 선제적 발굴·수집과 구술채록을 우선 추진하고, 구축된 아카이브를 개방형 디지털 플랫폼으로 운영하며 ‘인천 리서치 랩(Incheon Research Lab)’ 등 지역 기반 프로그램과 연계해 도시문화 아카이브형 미술관으로 기능해야 함을 제시한다.
Abstract
This study proposes strategies for establishing a regional art archive essential for the successful operation of the Incheon Museum of Art, scheduled to open in 2028. Despite Incheon’s multilayered history—rooted in its open port, industry, and migration—the absence of a municipal art museum has hindered the systematic accumulation of local art materials. Accordingly, the study emphasizes that the museum should function not merely as an exhibition venue but as a hub for local art history and urban cultural knowledge. After analyzing the limitations of existing archival practices in domestic public art museums, the study suggests developing clear acquisition policies and criteria grounded in Incheon’s urban context. It particularly highlights the need for proactive collection efforts—such as early documentation and oral history projects focusing on senior artists whose materials are at risk of being lost. Finally, it argues that the archive should be built as an open digital platform and linked with community-oriented programs, including the Incheon Research Lab, to establish the museum as a “city-culture archive–oriented institution.”
