Abstract
This study examines the character of the simultaneous cultivation of meditation and wisdom (定慧雙修) in Jinul′s Approach of Equal Maintenance of Alertness and Quiescence (惺寂等持門), focusing on its similarity with early Buddhist śamatha-vipaśyanā practice. Jinul emphasized the simultaneous cultivation of meditation and wisdom as a practice method to maintain awareness after awakening to the mind′s nature, which is empty-quiescent and spiritually knowing (靈知). This consists of inherent meditation-wisdom and cultivated meditation-wisdom, succeeding the doctrinal position of the Heze school. In particular, inherent meditation-wisdom, based on the Platform Sutra′s concept of the unity of meditation and wisdom, views meditation as practice in the Chan tradition and wisdom as enlightened understanding, whereby both function as one through equal cultivation (等學). This demonstrates a distinctive Chinese Chan view of cultivation and attainment that differs from Indian Buddhism′s sequential structure of meditation first, then contemplation. Specifically, cultivated meditation-wisdom, unlike the non-contrived observation of early Buddhism, has the characteristic of advancing toward the non-contrived state of inherent meditation-wisdom through skillful contrivance. Nevertheless, in terms of the concrete application of practice methods, Jinul′s Approach of Equal Maintenance of Alertness and Quiescence shows commonality with the Buddha′s spirit of simultaneous practice of śamatha-vipaśyanā. This spirit considered it optimal to simultaneously maintain quiescent śamatha and clearly observant vipaśyanā with awakened consciousness. Furthermore, the empty-quiescent and spiritually knowing mind, unlike ātman, describes two aspects of mind characterized by ever-awakened consciousness and cognitive nature, aligning with the early Buddhist practice spirit. This reveals that Jinul′s theory of simultaneous cultivation of meditation and wisdom maintains a certain continuity with early Buddhism while possessing the characteristics of Chinese Patriarchal Chan′s view of cultivation and attainment.
