Abstract
This study systematically analyzes the formation and development of Akṣara-cakra-dhyāna (Letter-wheel Meditation) and Candra-maṇḍala-dhyāna (Moon-disc Meditation), which are core practices in Esoteric Buddhism, through examination of middle and late period tantric texts. Akṣara-cakradhyāna, primarily developed around the Mahāvairocana-sūtra, evolved into an integrated practice system where the form, sound, and meaning of letters are unified. Particularly, the five transformations of the letter ′a′ systematically organized the entire process of Buddhist practice from initial awakening (bodhicitta) to saving sentient beings at the linguistic level. In practical aspects, Akṣara-cakra-dhyāna developed from ′visual maṇḍala′ to ′body maṇḍala′. The process by which the practitioner′s body becomes a cosmic maṇḍala through the four-layered maṇḍala concretely embodies the Esoteric Buddhist concept of Jeugsinseongbul (becoming Buddha in this very body). In the Mahāvairocana-sūtra, Akṣara-cakra-dhyāna and Candra-maṇḍala-dhyāna are combined in the form of mantra-wheels, presenting a unique meditation method where mantra letters on the luminous disc transform into light and unite with the practitioner. The Osangseongsingwan (五相成身觀) meditation of the Tattvasaṃgraha- mahāyāna-sūtra develops Candra-maṇḍala-dhyāna in a different manner, focusing on symbolic objects (vajra) rather than letters and emphasizing the gradual transformation of consciousness, showing characteristics of Yoga Tantra. The later tantric text Hevajratantra presents a dual letter-wheel system of moon-disc and sun-disc, where the separation and integration of Āli (vowels, feminine principle) and Kāli (consonants, masculine principle) well demonstrates the core tantric Buddhist concept of duality and its integration. This developmental process demonstrates that Esoteric Buddhist meditation practices transcend simple meditation techniques to become a comprehensive practice system integrating philosophical, symbolic, and practical dimensions. Akṣara-cakra-dhyāna and Candra-maṇḍala-dhyāna represent the unique methodology of Esoteric Buddhism for realizing the ideal of Jeugsinseongbul (即身成佛) by integrating letters and light, sound and form, language and consciousness. However, since the distribution of the living includes the three evil destinies in common, it can be said that the desire as the most direct and certain way that the common people of the human world can do is expressed as a practical action. This can be said to be possible only when the enlightened mind is the cause and compassion is on its basis.
