Abstract

The Avalokiteshvara belief is a common belief found in countries where Mahayana Buddhism has been handed down. Among them, the belief in Avalokiteshvara holds a very important position in Tibetan Buddhism. Tibetans believe that their land and leaders have a deep relationship with Avalokiteshvara, going as far as to believe that their leaders are his incarnation. It is with these cultural influences that various Sādhanā (tib. sgrub thabs) that recite the six-syllables mantra of Avalokiteshvara, have been written and edited. Tang tong gyalpo (Tang stong rgyal po, 1361?~1485), who was renowned as a Siddha in Tibet around the 14th century, was a teacher respected by all Buddhist orders in Tibetan Buddhism and is also regarded as the embodiment of the Avalokiteshvara. Among the various Sādhanā he compiled, Mantra Recitation of Great Compassion one: to benefit all Sentinent Beings such as the universe is used in all orders and faithfully shows the characteristics of Tantric meditation while showing the meaning and merit of the six-syllables mantra extensively.
