Abstract
This qualitative study explores the formation of school culture and the emergence of co-agency during the preparation and adaptation period of a new school year at Sarang Middle School. Participants included four teachers, four parents, and two students. Data were collected through individual and group interviews, as well as school documents, and analyzed using a spiral qualitative analysis approach. The findings indicate that Sarang Middle School exhibited a hospitable school culture characterized by relational orientation, active communication and collaboration, and the integration of innovative values with traditional practices during the transition period. Across all educational stakeholders, co-agency was found to be actively manifested. This process was facilitated by the succession of healthy leadership, traditions of shared leadership, the operation of professional learning communities, and the strategic use of the new school year transition period. In particular, experiences of welcoming new teachers, students, and parents, and building trust through such practices, played a significant role. The study highlights the significance of investigating school culture and agency in light of the unique characteristics of the new school year, while also acknowledging the limitations of a single school case and the restricted scope of interview questions. Policy implications emphasize the need for supportive measures grounded in inclusive, hospitality-based approaches.
