하회별신굿탈놀이 연행 변화와 보존회 역할 관계 고찰

본 연구는 하회별신굿탈놀이의 연행 변화와 보존회의 역할을 분석하여 전통 연희의 현대적 전승 방식과 지속 가능성을 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 하회별신굿탈놀이는 본래 마을 공동체의 제의적 맥락에서 행해지던 가면극이었다. 일제강점기 이후 전승이 단절되었고 1980년 국가무형유산으로 지정되면서 보존회 주도의 공연 중심 전승 방식이 자리 잡았다. 이에 따라 연행 방식과 공연 공간, 연행자와 관객의 관계 등이 변화하였으며 본 연구는 이러한 변화에 대해 보존회의 기획과 전승 활동을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 분석 결과 보존회는 사업 운영과 공연 기획을 통하여 연행 방식을 체계적으로 정착시키며 하회별신굿탈놀이의 지속적인 전승을 도모하였다. 공연 공간이 마당극 형식에서 고정된 무대로 변화하며 연희자의 즉흥성이 조정되었고 관객과의 상호작용 작용에도 변화가 나타났다. 그러나 보존회는 이러한 변화 속에서도 전통성과 현대성의 균형을 유지하기 위하여 전승 교육을 강화하고 관객이 참여할 수 있는 공연을 기획하는 등 다양한 전략을 추진하고 있다. 본 연구는 하회별신굿탈놀이의 연행 방식 변화가 단순히 외부 요인의 결과가 아니라 보존회의 기획과 운영 방식에 의해 형성된 측면이 크다는 점을 밝혔다. 이와 함께 공연 중심 전승 방식이 전통 연희의 본질을 유지하면서도 현대적 활용 가능성을 극대화할 수 있도록 보존회가 수행해야 할 역할을 제시하였다. 향후 연구에서는 연행자의 경험과 지역 공동체의 관점에서 공연 중심 전승 방식의 장기적 영향을 분석하는 것이 필요하다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes in the performance of Hahoe Byeol Shinguttalnori and the role of the preservation society, and to explore the modern transmission methods and sustainability of traditional plays. Hahoe Byeol Shinguttalnori was originally a masquerade that was performed in the ritual context of the village community. After the Japanese colonial period, the tradition was cut off, and in 1980, it was designated as a national intangible heritage, and the performance-centered transmission method led by the preservation society was established. As a result, the method of performance, the space of performance, and the relationship between performers and audiences have changed, and this study examines these changes with a focus on the planning and transmission activities of the preservation society. As a result of the analysis, the preservation association systematically established the performance method through business operation and performance planning, and sought to continue the transmission of Hahoe Byeol Shinguttal Nori. As the performance space changed from a madang play to a fixed stage, the performers' improvisation was adjusted, and the interaction with the audience changed. However, in order to maintain a balance between tradition and modernity amid these changes, the preservation society is pursuing various strategies such as strengthening tradition education and planning performances in which audiences can participate. This study revealed that the change in the performance method of Hahoe Byeol Shinguttalnori was not simply the result of external factors, but was largely shaped by the planning and operation method of the preservation society. At the same time, the role that the preservation society should play in order to maximize the possibility of modern use while maintaining the essence of traditional plays was suggested. Future studies need to analyze the long-term impact of performance-based transmission from the perspective of the practitioner's experience and the local community.
