Abstract
This study investigates the role of simulacra creators in the generation of agricultural heritage and the outcomes of their interventions, arguing that agricultural heritage cannot remain fixed at a specific historical moment but must continuously be reconfigured and transformed. While previous research has emphasized the historicity and the justification and methods for conservation of agricultural heritage, this study focuses on the practical reconstruction of agricultural heritage. Utilizing the case of the traditional ginger farming system in Wanju, it examines the issues of representation in the designation process and closely observes the perceptions and practical transformations of the community. The research was conducted through a combination of document analysis and participant observation. The application for designating Wanju’s agricultural heritage, which detailed various aspects of ginger farming according to the designation criteria, was a critical resource for exploring the utopian construction of the heritage. Additionally, a review of historical documents provided evidence for comparing the continuity of agricultural heritage from the past to the present. From 2021 to the present, ongoing participant observations allowed for a broad collection of data, including community perceptions and practices concerning agricultural heritage and administrative documents, offering a vivid insight into the community’s engagement with agricultural heritage. The findings reveal that the nationally important agricultural heritage was utopically assembled during the designation process through a combination of historical continuity and traditional agricultural techniques. The resulting heritage, more real than reality, faced difficulties in transmission due to its disconnection from actual agricultural practices, potentially leading to a relationship of alienation with the community. However, the recognition of a ginger-less agricultural heritage prompted the community to initiate practical transformations of traditional knowledge, thus paving the way for the continuation of agricultural heritage. These results suggest that agricultural heritage should not be viewed merely as a preservation object but must remain in a dynamic state of constant reconstruction and transformation even after designation.
