Abstract

This study aims to offer a new reading of Lee Ho-cheol’s Busijang Buimji-ro An Gada (1965) by examining the intersection and conflict between the “power-space” constructed by political power and the “counter-space” beyond its norms, through the lens of Michel Foucault’s theories on power and space. Devices such as the recurring radio broadcasts declaring “anti-communism as the nation’s supreme principle” function as the voices of oppressive power, transforming everyday life into a space dominated by the grand ideologies of “revolution” and “anti-communism.” However, as the narrative unfolds, the spaces depicted in the novel are not confined to ideological or disciplinary formations; instead, they emerge as heterotopias—alternative spaces that challenge the order imposed by political power. Within these heterotopias, the military regime’s notion of “revolution” is rendered hollow and meaningless, destabilizing the ideological foundation of the existing power-space. The process through which the perceptions produced by the power-space and those produced by heterotopia intersect and collide reveals that, although the novel’s spaces seem to embody an internalized anti-communist ideology, they in fact operate as heterotopias exposing the contradictions of reality. At this intersection of power-space and counter-space, this paper uncovers Lee Ho-cheol’s distinctive way of resisting the anti-communist ideology of the 1960s.
