반공주의의 내면화와 1960년대 풍자소설의 한 경향－이호철ㆍ서기원의 단편을 중심으로

이 글은 1960년대 반공주의의 특성을 검토하고 당시 창작된 풍자소설의 한 경향을 파악하려는 의도를 지닌다. 5ㆍ16 주체인 박정희 정권의 지배 담론으로 활용된 반공주의는 이전 시기의 그것과는 구별되는 성격을 가진다. 1960년대 반공주의를 이전의 반공주의와 구분하는 키워드는 ‘내면화’이다. 이것은 반공주의가 제도적 차원이나 법집행 차원을 넘어서 사회성원들의 사유방식 자체를 통제하는 데까지 나아간 것을 의미한다. 반공주의의 내면화는 관련 기호들의 외연을 넓히는 방식(예: 공산주의자→용공주의자)으로 이루어졌다. 이를 통해 정부로서는 친정부적이지 않은 행위를 특별한 조작 없이 모두 반공의 이름으로 처단할 수 있게 되었고, 국민들은 자신들의 주체적인 행위나 의견을 외연이 넓어진 ‘빨갱이’의 그것과 구별할 수 없게 되었다. 반공이라는 체제 하에서 국민들은 자신의 정체성을 확립할 수 없었으며, 따라서 주체적이거나 논리적인 사고를 할 수 없는 상태로 나아간다. 내면화된 검열이라는 것은 이러한 상태를 일컫는다. 풍자는 두 가지 성격을 가진다. 하나는 비판의 형태라는 것이고, 하나는 우회의 형태라는 것이다. 이 글에서 살피는 풍자소설들은 검열을 비판하면서 동시에 그것을 우회한다. 1960년대 중반을 전후로 풍자소설이 활발히 창작되었던 사실은 작가들이 반공주의가 생산하는 모순에 대한 비판의식을 표출하기 위해서는 강력한 검열 장치를 우회하여야 했던 상황과 관계가 있다. 이호철의 「부시장 부임지로 안 가다」와 「어느 이발소에서」는 반공주의 관련 기호들의 외연이 확장되면서 생기는 모순을 우연히 일어나는 촌극을 통해 날카롭게 묘파하여 풍자하고 있다. 등장인물들은 불법적인 행동을 하지 않았음에도 불구하고, 도피하거나 부당한 외압 앞에서 비굴해지는 모습을 보이고 있다. 공산주의자로부터 자신을 구분할 수 없는 시민은 ‘잠재적 죄인’으로 전락해버리기 때문이다. 서기원의 「아리랑」, 「이유」, 「오산」은 용공분자를 색출하는 임무를 가진 기관원을 주인공으로 내세운다. 그런데 그들과 그들이 속해 있는 기관은 용공분자를 평범한 시민들로부터 가려낼 수 있는 확립된 기준을 가지고 있지 않다. 그리하여 그들의 임무는 언제나 성공적으로 수행되지 못하고 희화화된 촌극으로 이어진다. 이를 통해 용공분자의 색출자체보다 감시 자체가 더 중시되는 반공주의의 대내 통제적 특성이 드러난다.
Abstract
This paper is focused on the relation of the special character of anticommunism and satirical short stories in 1960"s, in Korea. The anti-communism system used by the "Park, Chung-hee" government had a special character, which can be described by the word "internalization". With this "internalization", the anti-communism system could control not only people"s act, but also their thinking itself. The internalization of anti-communism was made possible by widening denotations of related signs. By that, The government could control all kind of anti-government acts in the name of anti-communism without any fabrication because no Korean citizen was free from the widened sign "pro-communist". As people were not able to own concrete methods to distinguish themselves from communists, they also could not own their subjective identity and independence. "The internalized censorship" is another word describes this condition. Satire is a form of criticism, and at the same time, it is a form of a roundabout. Writers who would criticize the negative effects of anticommunism in 1960"s, always had to face the strong censorship it produced. Satire is one of the best way to evade censorship, criticizing itself and its owners. For this reason, writers tried new type of their creation, that leads to satirical short stories. Lee, Ho-chul"s stories contain humoristic episodes driven by widened denotations of signs. Characters run away or get obsequious even though they did nothing illegal. By this stories, he criticize anti communism system which keep people from being independent and expressing their own thoughts. Main characters in Seo, Ki-won"s stories are agents of the government, whose mission is to chase and capture communist. Their missions always fail because they have no formula to distinguish communists from ordinary people. It shows that domestic political control was an important issue of anti-communism, because characters lay stress on investigation itself, not on arresting communists.
