초록
It is suitable to categorize the works of Lee, Ho-chul into two directions, shaping the experience of displaced people after the Korean war, and the lives of the lower middle class at an earlier stage of industrialization. However, the approach faces limitation when the works are analyzed in a diachronic way. Based on such understanding, this paper aims to make an analysis frame to overcome the issue. The focus of the paper is on the meaning of spatial backgrounds in Lee's works. The backgrounds become distinctive and have possibility to be materialized. They have three symbolic meanings: first, the recurrent setting to which the displaced wanted to go back; second, the setting in which the people drifted from place to place after displacement became a fact of life after the national division; and third, the setting which was replaced by an equivalent of desire the people seemed to have to settle down in South Korea. The three have basically the same root. That is the desire the displaced wanted to have in various ways to settle down in the South. This paper analyzes the meaning of the three spatial backgrounds so as to examine changes in the meaning of desire based on the consciousness of being displaced in a diachronic way, and comes up with such approach as diachronic standard to interpret Lee's works.
