Abstract

This paper focuses on the Four-Road Operations conducted by the Cho-Ming allied forces during the Jeongyu War and the war's conclusion in the Imjin War. While there are many existing studies on the general factors that contribute to war endings, this paper specifically analyzes factors unique to the time and region of the Imjin War. The domestic factors include: ① Joseon's will to resist and ② the development of its combat posture and weapon systems. International factors analyzed include: ③ changes in Japan's political power, ④ the weakening of the Japanese military’s ability to sustain the war, and ⑤ the Ming army's determination to continue the war. To explore these factors, this study examines the background, progress, and outcomes of the Cho-Ming allied forces's Four-Road Operation and how these elements influenced the end of the war. The temporal scope of the study is from August 1597, when the Jeongyu War broke out, to December 1598, considered the end of the conflict. Through this study, comparisons are drawn between the security environment surrounding the Korean Peninsula in the 16th century and today, providing insights into the implications for current security and the direction for future preparations.
