본 논문은 일제강점기 한국 동요의 개척기에 활동한 작곡가 정순철에 관한 실증적 연구이다. 1920, 30년대 한국 동요가 정착하는 과정에서 그는 동요 작곡가로서 또 동요보급활동가로 선구적 역할을 했다. 하지만, 1950년 한국전쟁기에 납북되면서 그는 우리 동요사에서 잊힌 존재가 되었다. 상당 시간이 흐른 2000년대 들어 그의 생애와 작품에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 하지만, 제한적인 자료로 인해 그의 생애는 여전히 많은 부분이 공백으로 남아있고, 당시에 활동했던 동료 작곡가의 회고에 바탕을 둔 전기적 부분은 사실과다른 부분도 많다. 이에 필자는 실증주의에 기반하여 그가 활동했던 당시의 언론, 잡지 등의 자료를 최대한살폈다. 그가 동요에 적극적인 관심을 가진 데는 불운했던 가정사가 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, 방정환의 역할이 지대했다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 또한, 그는 최소 60곡 이상의 작품을남긴 동요 작곡가로, 무엇보다 동요사의 개척기에 ‘동요보급’ 활동을 왕성하게 펼친 점을 주목하였다. 여느 작곡가들과 달리 전국의 현장 방문, 라디오 방송 출연, 음악 교사로서 동요합창 지도, 지면 활용 등 다양한 수단을 활용하여 동요의 이론과 실제를 전파하는 데 이바지한 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 그는 눈높이 설명 방식으로, 특히 ‘시연’ 방법 을 통해 전국의 어린이들이 동요에 쉽게 눈 뜨도록 했다. 따라서 정순철은 한국 동요의 정착 시기에 가장 선구적 역할을 한 인물로 규정할 수 있다.
Abstract
The thesis is an empirical study on composer Jeong Sun-cheol who was active during the settlement of Korean children’s songs in Japanese colonial era. In the 1920s and 1930s, during the settlement of Korean children’s songs, Jeong Sun-cheol played a pioneering role as a children’s song composer and an activist for distributing children’s songs. However, he became forgotten in the history of Korean children’s songs when he was kidnapped during the Korean War in 1950. In the 2000s, full-scale research on his life and works has been conducted, but due to limited data, many of his annals remain blank, and errors that are different from the facts are also found by being based on the retrospective of a fellow composer who was active at the time. Therefore, based on positivism, I looked at materials such as the media and magazines at the time when he was active as much as possible. He was a children’s song composer who left at least 60 songs, and most of all, he paid attention to his active activities to supply children’s songs during the pioneering period of modern Korean children’s song history. Unlike other children’s song composers, it was confirmed that he contributed to the spread of the theory and reality of children’s songs through various methods such as on-site visits across the country, appearances at radio stations, guidance on children’s songs as a teacher, and the use of various pages. In particular, it can be said that he made it easy for children across the country to open their eyes to children’s songs through the method of explaining from their eyes in consideration of young readers (audience), especially through the demonstration of children’s songs. Therefore, it can be said that Jeong Sun-cheol played a pioneering role in the period of the settlement of Korean children’s songs.
