정순철은 납북으로 인하여 한동안 우리 아동문학사에서는 본격적인 탐구 대상이 되지 못했다. 최근 들어 정순철의 생애와 업적에 대한 조명이 이루어지면서 그의 실체에 접근하기 위한 노력이 조금씩 활기를 띠고 있는 실정이다. 그럼에도 여전히 밝혀야 할 것들이 남아있다. 이 논문은 정순철의 교육자로서의 행적에 초점을 맞추어 그의 생애를 복기함으로써 그의 행적이 우리 아동문학사에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지를 탐색하기 위해 씌어졌다. 정순철은 청년기인 1927년 만 26세부터 만 49세가 되던 1950년 9.28 수복 당시 납북을 당할 때까지 교사로서의 생을 살았다. 이를 보건대 교육자로서의 행적은 그의 실체를 구성하는 가장 중요한 요소라 생각된다. 이 논문에서는 우선 그가 근무한 학교들과 관련된 자료에 근거하여 교사로서 그의 행적을 가능한 한 세밀하게 검토하고자 하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 교사로서 갖는 그의 위치가 당시 그가 몸담았던 색동회 활동, 나아가서 아동문학사적 맥락에서 어떤 관련성과 의미를 갖는지를 탐색해 보고자 하였다.
Abstract
Jeong Sun-cheol was not a subject of full-scale research in the history of children's literature in South Korea for a while due to his abduction to the North Korea. Recently, efforts to approach his true identity have been gradually gaining momentum as the life and achievements of Jeong have been brought to light. Nevertheless, several things remain that need to be further revealed. This paper explored the influence of Jeong's actions on the history of children's literature by focusing on his actions as an educator and reviewing his life. Starting at the age of 26 in 1927, Jeong lived his life as a teacher until he was abducted to North Korea on September 28, 1950, when he was 49 years old. Considering this, his actions as an educator are likely to have formed the major part of his true identity. This paper first reviewed his actions as a teacher as closely as possible based on materials related to the schools where he worked. Based on the findings, this study examined the relevance and significance of his position as a teacher to the activities of Saekdonghoe, a children's literature association of which he was a member, within the context of the history of children’s literature in Korea.
