Abstract

This study aims to address the question of rebuilding a community, employing the concept of the “common” in order to search for hospitable communal relations liberated from property. The study begins with examining the works of Jean-Luc Nancy and Giorgio Agamben. Upon drawing out from both scholars critical views of a community open to otherness, I turn to the works of Roberto Esposito. What I focus on at this section is Esposito’s analysis of immunitary paradigm, through which we can gain the clues about the question of defensive and exclusionary communal relations prevalent in contemporary community politics. Esposito shows attentive understanding of immunization, in which an inclusive and porous communal relations between the self and other can imply a conceptual threshold in welcoming others. To grasp the conceptual paradox of community which can be both defensive and hospitable, Esposito’s works need to be supplemented by Judith Butler’s emphasis on the precarious nature of human beings. In sum, making a community hospitable to others can be an attainable project through the renewed conceptualization of immunity and recognizing the vulnerable nature of every individual.
