서구중심주의와 한국에서 ‘학문하기’

이 글은 같은 시기에 출간된, <글로벌 지식장과 상징폭력: 한국 사회과학에 대한 비판적 성찰>, <지배받는 지배자: 미국 유학과 한국 엘리트의 탄생>, <공자, 잠든 유럽을 깨우다: 유럽 근대의 뿌리가 된 공자와 동양사상>이라는 3권의 저작을 ‘서구종속성’과 ‘학문하기’라는 키워드를 중심으로 비판적으로 읽어 내고자 한다. 3권의 저서는 다루는 내용적 차이에도 불구하고, 한국 지식장에 존재하는 서구종속성이라는 문제의식을 공유한다. 그리고 이 땅에서 어떻게 학문을 해야 하는지에 대한 힌트를 제공한다. 한국에서 학문하는 방식에 있어서, 위의 저서들은 각각 니체적 노예의 학문하기, 수단으로서의 학문하기, 배태된 서구 중심주의적 학문하기 양식을 보여준다. <글로벌 지식장과 상징폭력: 한국 사회과학에 대한 비판적 성찰>과 <공자, 잠든 유럽을 깨우다: 유럽 근대의 뿌리가 된 공자와 동양사상>는 서구종속성 극복을 논의함에도 불구하고, 서구중심주의 틀 안에서 그들의 논의를 진행한다. 이는 서구종속성의 재생산을 가져 올 수 있다. 상대적으로 <지배받는 지배자: 미국 유학과 한국 엘리트의 탄생>는 덜 서구 중심적 저작이나, 서구와 같은 글로벌 지식장이 되어야 한다는 서구기반 목표준거점이 은연중에 작동한다.
Abstract
Focusing on the concepts of ‘Western-dependency’ and ‘doing research’, this paper aims to review <Global Intellectual Field and Symbolic Violence>(2015), <The Ruler under the Western Ruler>(2015), and <Confucius, Waking up Sleeping Europe>(2015), critically and comparatively. These books discuss different contents; yet, they all pay heed to the Western-dependency of the academic fields of humanities and social sciences in South Korea as one of their major research concerns. All three books also hint at different ways of doing research in South Korea to overcome the Western-dependency. As for modes of doing research in South Korea, the books respectively reveal ‘doing research by a Nietzschean slave’, ‘doing research as a means’, and ‘doing research based on embedded Western-centrism’. Although the three books argue for overcoming South Korean academic communities’s Western-dependency, their talks and suggestions are under way within the framework of Western-centrism. This may, in turn, reproduce Western-dependency in South Korean scholarly communities.
