한국 사회과학의 서구 의존성을 어떻게 극복해야 하는가에 대한 논쟁은 지금도 계속되고 있다. 강정인 교수의 책, 『서구중심주의를 넘어서』는 한국 사회과학이 어떻게 서구 의존성을 벗어날 수 있는가에 대한 정치하고 깊이 있는 분석을 담고 있는 책이라는 데는 이견이 없을 것이다. 그럼에도 이 글에서 나는 『서구중심주의를 넘어서』가 ① 책임의 귀속 문제, ② 적실성의 문제, ③ 주제와 개념적 자원의 혼동 문제, ④ 다문화 중심주의 문제 등 네 가지 문제에 대한 적절한 답을 제시하지 못하고 있다고 비판할 것이다. 이런 비판에 입각해서 이 글에서 나는 강정인 교수의 전략과는 차별되는 대안을 제시할 것이다. 좀더 구체적으로, 나는 우리가 세계 수준의 사회과학을 생산하려면 현재 우리가 당연시하는 사회과학 연구방식을 바꾸는 길밖에 없다는 것을 주장할 것이다.
Abstract
Debates about the possibility of overcoming the dependence of Korean social science on the conceptual resources of the Western social science are still going on. Professor Jung In Kang’s Beyond the Shadow of Eurocentrism, to be sure, is one of the most detailed and serious studies in which strategies for developing autonomous Korean social sciences are suggested. In this article, however, I criticize professor Kang’s main arguments presented in Beyond the Shadow of Eurocentrism for failing to adequately answer the following four questions: (1) the attribution of responsibility, (2) the problem of relevance, (3) the confusion between topic and resources, and (4) polycentric multiculturalism. Such criticisms will enable me to develop an alternative set of strategies to develop autonomous social sciences in Korea. More specifically, I shall argue in this article that we must radically change our taken-for-granted practice of doing social science to produce the world-class social science in Korea.
