Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to bring to light the issue of North Korea's aging population in the context of SDGs implementation and expand it into the broader context of a sustainable Korean Peninsula. Any form of agreed upon standard serves as a tool to diagnose the phenomenon. In 2015, UN member countries resolved to achieve detailed goals for each of the 17 SDGs indicators by 2030 and are pursuing them as national policies. In July 2019, Korea also established the K-SDGs, but the content to promote sustainable national development on the Korean Peninsula only briefly describes the 13th goal of K-SDG 16, ‘promoting cooperation between North and South Korea.’ Not only reading the internal dynamics of North Korean society, but also examining how the North Korean authorities project and respond to the social problems they face into international standards will have implications in terms of establishing new inter-Korean relations in the future and the sustainable development of the two systems or two countries on the Korean Peninsula Provides. However, while the amount of research attempting to link the SDGs with North Korea is absolutely insufficient, research exploring measures to respond to North Korea's population is even rarer. Kim Jong-un elevated fertile women to the ranks of ‘maternal heroes’ in order to slow North Korea’s entry into an aging society. Compared to numerous publications and studies on Korea's entry into a super-aging society, the impact of North Korea's entry into an aging society with low birth rates on North Korean society as well as on Korean society preparing for population decline or unification at the Korean Peninsula level has been receiving little media attention recently. It is largely overlooked.
