Abstract
This study aims to analyze the linguistic landscape of signage in Hwangridan-gil, a tourism-centered urban regeneration district located in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and to propose improvements for more effective communication with international tourists. Although Hwangridan-gil has rapidly emerged as a popular tourist destination due to increased domestic and international tourism, inconsistent signage formats and inadequate information presentation have limited accessibility and understanding for foreign visitors. Based on field research conducted in July 2025, this study examined 110 signs, analyzing language types, additional information presentation, and pictogram usage. Results revealed that over half (53.2%) of the signs were monophonic Korean, and among those using English only (26.61%), many used romanized forms of Korean words, which often confused foreign visitors. Additionally, abstract store names and ambiguous pictograms frequently resulted in difficulties for tourists attempting to identify the types of businesses or products offered. Consequently, this study proposes practical strategies for improvement, including standardizing signage formats, adding English information for clarity, developing standardized pictogram guidelines by business type, implementing digital multilingual information systems using QR codes, and establishing an integrated linguistic landscape management framework through cooperation between local governments, merchant associations, and urban regeneration centers. This research highlights that urban regeneration areas, unlike ordinary commercial districts, not only have the possibility but also the obligation of public-sector involvement and systematic management, underscoring the importance of linguistic landscapes as a means to enhance place identity and tourism competitiveness.
