Abstract
Purpose This study examined the effects of top-down water bag training on core endurance, functional movement, and dynamic balance in collegiate Taekwondo Poomsae athletes and aimed to propose an effective training protocol. Method The study participants comprised 23 collegiate Taekwondo Poomsae athletes who were randomly assigned to a control group (CG, n = 10, M = 6, F = 4) or a water bag training group (WBG, n = 13, M = 6, F = 7). The WBG performed 60 minute training sessions three times per week for eight weeks, while the CG continued their routine training. Results In the WBG, core endurance increased for trunk flexion, trunk extension, and lateral trunk flexion. Functional movement scores improved for overhead deep squat, hurdle step, inline lunge, and rotary stability. Dynamic balance improved bilaterally. In the CG, trunk extension showed a significant increase, while dynamic balance improved in the left anterior and posteromedial directions, both posterolateral directions, and in the composite scores for both sides. Conclusion Top-Down Training Using a Water Bag demonstrated positive effects on core endurance, functional movement, and dynamic balance in Taekwondo Poomsae athletes. These adaptations appear to result from the co-contraction of agonist, antagonist, and deep stabilizing muscles during the control of unpredictable inertial loads generated by the water bag’s fluid dynamics. Such neuromuscular co-activation is presumed to enhance whole-body coordination efficiency, thereby leading to substantive improvements in performance-related variables. Accordingly, this modality is proposed as an effective training method for improving the athletic performance of collegiate Poomsae athletes.
