Abstract

Purpose This study aimed to explore educational strategies for adult Taekwondo practitioners by identifying their participation motives and psychological factors, in order to promote their sustained engagement in Taekwondo training and to develop an adult-oriented Taekwondo curriculum. Method To achieve the research purpose, a qualitative research design was employed. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 participants, including adult Taekwondo practitioners, instructors, coaches, institutional staff, dropouts, and practitioners of other martial arts. Results Adult Taekwondo participation was driven by multifaceted motives such as health management, stress relief, self-actualization, and the recovery of past experiences. However, several hindering factors to sustained participation were identified, including lack of time, insufficient institutional support, program imbalance, and instructors’ limited awareness of adult learners’ characteristics. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest: First, the development of a segmented curriculum that reflects adult learners’ motivation types and training goals; Second, the establishment of flexible training environments tailored to adults’ life-cycle characteristics and daily routines; Third, the reinforcement of convergent contents such as Taekwondo aerobics, meditation, and self defense; Fourth, the enhancement of instructional professionalism and mentoring competence through reeducation of instructors; and Fifth, the introduction of a “community-based adult Taekwondo model” through linkage with local communities and public institutions.
