Abstract

The liberation era from 1945 to 1950 when liberation and division, and the Korean War(6. 25) ravaged like heavy storm was the most seething period of turbulence and confusion. Among the poets worked at that time Seol Jung Shik(1912～1953) was outstanding both in quantity and contents. Seol Jung Shik became the tragic character who at the end was abandoned by the systems of North and South as well as from literature itself, though he chose the communist ideology and fiercely continued his work underneath his outward life as an elite born in a confucianist-protestant family and studied in the U.S. and worked at the US military government office during the liberation era. In this respect Seol Jung Shik's life and literature could be very symbolic to track down the changing process of intellectuals' perception who lived during the liberation period and their awareness of time and their choice of ideology and system. But the study of Seol Jung Shik's literature didn't begin in earnest yet; it is only concentrated in the works of the liberation era the time when Seol Jung Shik's activity was somewhat vigorous. This article is to look over the early poetries of Seol Jung Shik that were not under the light so far and to study the poet's values of literature and the directing point as well as the sense of time shown in his works. This is because the early works are the important clue not only to understand the values of literature of a poet or author in the way to identify the basic attitude or the base, but often to understand whole picture of changing aspect including the flow and tendency throughout the world of works. So from this, we can deepen the understanding of Seol Jung Shik's whole works and also we expect to find some clue to understand several problems as well as the disharmony between Seol Jung Shik's liberation era works and the tendency of Chosun Writer's Union though these works were the flower of his literature.
