전사연구에 있어서 가장 어려운 사항 가운데 하나가 연구의 근거가 되는 사료획득이다.지암리 -파로호 전투는 유엔군 제3차 반격작전 시 미 제9군단의 1단계 공격작전으로 그동안 가평 -화천 진격전,용문산 전투 등으로 소개가 되었는데,1차 사료의 부재로 상충되는 내용이 다소 있었다.본 연구에서는 ’06년 비밀이 해제되어 국사편찬위원회에 보관되어 있던 미 제9군단의 지휘보고서와 작전계획,명령 등 연구의 가장 핵심이 되는 1차 사료를 획득하여 연구의 기초자료로활용하였다. 또한 이번 연구는 전쟁사 연구의 객관성을 높이는 새로운 방법을 제시하고 있다.기억의 한계로 인해 명확하지 않은 기록을 복원하는 방법으로 적성국가의 사료를 포함한 여러 가지 관점에서의 사실을 조합하여 재해석하는 것이다.그 결과총 6건의 새로운 사실을 확인,해석 및 평가하였고,3건에 대한 재해석 및 재평가를 실시하였다. 또한 본 연구에서는 전투 그 자체의 분석은 물론,상급부대 작전에 기여한 측면을 별도로 분석하였다.전략과 작전술,전술이 유기적으로 연계되어 있음을 고려할 때,각 전투의 결과가 상급부대 작전에 기여하지 못한다면 그 전투가 비록이긴 전투라 할지라도 진정한 승리라고는 볼 수 없다.이런 측면의 분석은 매우중요하지만 지금까지는 사료와 인식의 부족으로 이 분야의 연구는 이루어지지 않았다.설령 있다하더라도 그것은 패배한 전투에 대한 도덕적 명분을 주기위한 억측이 대다수였다.하지만 이번 지암리 -파로호 전투 연구에서는 작전술 제대의작전목적을 이루기 위한 전술 제대의 노력과 방법,뿐만 아니라 전술 제대의 작전결과가 작전술 제대의 목표선정에 기여한 측면까지를 1차 사료를 근거로 명확하게 분석하였다.이것은 전투를 분석하고 평가하는 새로운 접근법으로 향후,전투를 분석하는 하나의 틀로서 계속 연구되어야 할 방법이라 할 수 있다. 우리는 역사 속에서 경험할 필요 없는 시행착오를 줄이고 간접경험을 쌓기 위해서는 전쟁사 연구가 반드시 필요하다는 사실을 배웠다.따라서 전쟁사 연구는앞으로 계속되어야 하며,더욱 발전되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Themostdifficultfactorin studying military history istheacquisition of the historicalmaterials thatform the basis ofthe research.Jiamri-Paroho BattletheU.S IX Corps'offensiveplanduringtheU.N AlliedForces'Third Counterattack intheKoreanWar,hasbeencalledby themilitary historians 'the Kapyong-Hwacheon Battle','Yongmun Mountain Battle',and many others.In the past,severalstudies conducted on thebattle conflicted with othersduetothelackoftheprimaryhistoricalsources.Inthecurrentstudy wehaveacquiredtheprimaryhistoricalsourcesthatform theveryfoundation ofthe research on the Jiamri-Paroho Battle,including the U.S IX Corps'CommandReports,OperationOrdersandOperationPlans,andutilizedthem as thefundamentaldata in theresearch.Theseclassified documentshad been releasedin2006andkeptintheNationalInstituteofKoreanHistory. Inaddition,thecurrentstudyproposesanew methodthatcanaidtakinga moreobjectiveview in thefield ofthemilitary history.This method tries historicalre-assessmentby putting historicalfactsfrom variousperspectives together,eventhoseoftheenemystatesoftheRepublicofKorea.Asaresult six new historicalfactshavebeen confirmed,interpreted,and assessed,and threehistoricalfactshavebeenre-interpretedandre-assessed Moreover,thecurrentstudyhasnotonlyanalyzedthebattleitselfbutalso itseffectsandcontributionstothehigh-rankedunit‘soperations,Considerin thefactthatmilitary strategy,operation and tacticsarelinked closely with oneanother,abattlewoncannotbeconsideredatruevictorywhenthebattle hasno effectorcannotprovideany typeofassistanceto thehigh-ranked unit's operations.Even though analysis from this approach is definitely significant,suchstudieshaveseldom takenplaceduetothelackofhistorical materialsandawareness,andthosethathavetakenplaceweremostlymere conjecturestoprovidemoraljustificationsinthebattleslost.However,inthis research on the Jiamri-Paroho Battle,we analyzed,based on the primary historicalresourcesthatwehaveacquired,notonlythetacticalunit‘sefforts and tactics to accomplish operation unit’s mission,butalso how much the tacticalunit‘s mission contributed to designating operation unit’s mission priority. Itcan be considered an innovative approach to analyzing and assessing battles,which hasto bestudied continuously asanew paradigm ofbattle analysis.We havelearned thatthe field ofmilitary history is essentialto evadeunnecessary trialand errorand gain invaluableexperiencesindirectly. Researchonthemilitaryhistoryhastocontinueonandprogress further.
